STATEMENT OF NJCTA CHAIRWOMAN ELIZABETH MURRAY ON INTERNET SAFETY INITIATIVE

Trenton, NJ - The following is a statement of support for the Internet safety initiative being undertaken by Attorney General Anne Milgram and the New Jersey legislature from NJCTA Chairwoman and Comcast Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs Elizabeth Murray on behalf of the NJCTA and its member companies.

“On behalf of the New Jersey Cable Telecommunications Association (NJCTA) and its member companies - Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable, Service Electric, and US Cable - I am pleased to declare our support for the Internet safety initiative undertaken by New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram and the New Jersey legislature.

“This aggressive, innovative approach to Internet safety puts New Jersey at the forefront of this important issue.  As New Jersey’s leading providers of high-speed, broadband Internet service, we have always made Internet safety a priority through our use of technology and our commitment to education.

“Cablevision’s Power to Learn program, for example, includes an innovative curriculum called Internet Smarts.  This signature initiative encourages parents and teachers to work with children to examine digital media issues.  Internet Smarts provides a Family Resource Guide, interactive case studies, and an Internet Smarts certification program.

“At Comcast we’ve partnered with Time Warner and several other media and telecommunications organizations to provide parents with an online safety information portal called Project Online Safety.  The project provides links to all of the partner companies’ online safety resources and initiatives.

“As an industry we provide state-of-the-art online security services to our customers, often at no extra cost.  We provide parents with easy-to-use controls that allow them to block and filter content, monitor chat sessions, limit online access to pre-set hours, and prevent certain types of personal information from being transmitted over the Internet.  And our customer service representatives are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day to answer questions related to Internet security and Internet security products.

“New Jersey’s cable companies have also entered into an agreement with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to prevent websites that NCMEC identifies as containing images and content that exploit children from being hosted on our servers.

“We are proud of our Internet safety initiatives and we are very pleased to put our support behind Attorney General Milgram and the New Jersey legislature as they seek to pass their Internet safety initiative.”
